Jim eventually became so estranged from his parents that he would later claim that they were dead. Not much is known about his early years, although he claimed in interviews that he began writing poetry in sixth grade and filled his notebooks with writings through high school. He read books constantly and told friends that he planned to model his life based on the hedonistic French poet Arthur Rimbaud. When Jim showed Ray some of his poems, he insisted to Jim that they should put together a band for him to sing his poems. By , the group was playing in Sunset Strip nightclubs. After moving to more respectable clubs, the group became known for its charismatic stage personality and its hypnotic music, which was highlighted by Ray's eerie keyboard sounds and Robbie's jazzy guitar music. With some misgivings, Elektra Records president Jac Holzman signed them for a recording contract.

Once on stage, Morrison told the story of the backstage episode and started taunting the police, who dragged him off the stage and arrested him. The crowd riots, leaving the venue in disarray. Many are arrested. Later, over protestors gathered at the police station in a demonstration and more arrests were made.

He began his college education in at St. Petersburg Junior College now St. Petersburg College in Florida and developed his talents as a performer by reciting poetry at the local Beaux Arts coffeehouse. There he met Ray Manzarek , who played the organ in the rock group that the two formed in with guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. Woman Morrison was known for his drinking and drug use and outrageous stage behaviour. During a concert in Miami, he allegedly exposed himself onstage, and he was later convicted on indecent exposure and profanity charges. He was sentenced to six months in prison but was granted bail pending his appeal in he was posthumously pardoned. In Morrison left the Doors to write poetry and moved to Paris, where he died of heart failure.
